Indigenous Peoples are facing a new wave of extractivism for transition minerals key in battery development such as copper, nickel, cobalt and lithium. These mining projects risk replicating the same harms of the fossil fuel economy: threatening Indigenous Peoples’ rights, especially Indigenous women’s rights, and destroying biodiverse ecosystems. We will discuss why Indigenous women’s rights must be prioritized, share case studies of Indigenous womens’ leadership, discuss capacity building strategies that include Traditional Knowledge and other technologies to defend the rights of Indigenous women, and explore how their rights can be guaranteed through the implementation of Free, Prior and Informed Consent.
