Environmental Impact Assessments – Gállok, Sweden, and Nunavut, Canada
12 november 2024 kl 13:30 - 15:00
Griet Mortier will present a comparative analysis of Environmental Impact Assessments for the Mary River Project in Nunavut, Canada, and the Kallak (Gállok) Project in Norrland, Sweden. Using thematic analysis, Griet Mortier examined differences in content and scope, which revealed critical gaps in how environmental, economic, social, cultural and health impacts are identified and mitigated.
The findings raise important questions about the role of EIAs as tools for sustainable development and the need to integrate Indigenous perspectives in assessments that help shape the future of Arctic regions.
Griet Mortier moved to Sweden in 2022 and recently completed her master’s thesis in Environmental Science on Environmental Impact Assessments for mining in the Arctic, which will be the focus of this seminar. She holds two master’s degrees from Umeå University: one in Environmental Sciences with a focus on Sustainable Development, and another in Gender, Justice, and Society.
The seminar will be in English. All interested are welcome to attend in the Fatmomakke conference room on the 4th floor of the NBET building.
